The Koala Volcano is cut by several deep gorges, due to thousands of years of erosion. Unlike the typical Hawaiian volcanos, Koala is shaped like a foot. The huge landslide that occurred around 250,000 to 300,000 years ago may be responsible for the current shape of the volcano. The Kohala volcano is inactive. Since the volcano is so far from the nearest major landmasses, the ecosystem of Kohala has experienced geographic isolation that has made it very different from that of other places. The current elevation of the volcano is 5,480 ft. (1,670 m).
